“Ahunan sa Ping-as”: Rekindling A Centuries-old Religious Gathering

Nestled amidst the majestic Sierra Madre Mountain, in Pakil, Laguna, thrives a religious gathering of immense spiritual significance. Dubbed “Ahunan sa Ping-as,” this age-old tradition dates back to 1671, holding an immense importance for Catholic devotees who undertake a challenging pilgrimage to Mount Ping-as to express their spiritual devotion or “panata.”

Historical Origins:

Ahunan sa Ping-as traces its roots back 350-plus years ago when Rev. Father Francisco Solier, an esteemed Catholic priest, commenced a solemn sacrifice atop Mount Ping-as carrying a cross. Father Solier braved the steep terrains of the Sierra Madre as an act of devotion. Inspired by his actions, the local populace embraced this tradition, transforming it into an annual pilgrimage symbolizing their unwavering faith.

The Spiritual Journey:

Every last Saturday of May, devout Catholics from Pakil and beyond gather to embark on the arduous trek up the Sierra Madre Mountain en route to Mount Ping-as. This pilgrimage serves as a physical and spiritual journey, where devotees retrace the steps of Father Solier by performing the 14 Stations of the Cross, also known as “kubol,” allowing participants to reflect on their faith and express their devotion.

Resurgence Amidst Pandemic:

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted Ahunan sa Ping-as. The annual gathering, typically attracting a large number of participants, was halted for health safety reasons. However, the tradition was revived on May 27, 2023, marking a momentous occasion for the faithful.

The Carving of the Wooden Cross:

At the culmination of the pilgrimage, following a solemn mass atop Mount Ping-as, a unique ritual takes place. Devotees gather around to carve a piece of the wooden cross (to “pingas” in the local dialect, from which the mountain takes its name) for them to keep as sacred memorabilia. This cherished memento serves as a tangible reminder of their spiritual journey and devotion to their faith.

Preserving Tradition:

Ahunan sa Ping-as stands as a testament to the enduring power of tradition and religious heritage. Despite the passage of centuries and the challenges posed by the modern world, the faithfuls in Pakil and far away places have preserved this sacred gathering.

It serves as a reminder of the rich cultural tapestry of the region, allowing younger generations to connect with their roots and appreciate the significance of their religious beliefs.
