Carabao Races: Culture and Tradition in the Philippines

The carabao race at Barangay Bibiclat in Aliaga, Nueva Ecija, Philippines is a traditional event held to commemorate the Feast of St. John the Baptist on June 25, 2024. Alongside the Taong Putik (mud people) Festival that has become a tourist attraction, the carabao race draws crowds. It is held in an open field near the church where locals colorfully decorate and condition their animals for the competition. The race started after the holy mass attended by Catholic devotees who participated in the Taong Putik procession.

About 80 races took place on three dirt tracks. Hundreds of farmers and spectators from neighboring towns watched despite the scorching heat of the sun.

In the races, a sense of friendly competition is more important than betting. The event is about showcasing the carabaos’ skills and agility, the bond between the animals and their handlers, and celebrating local culture and tradition.
